Request: Links to posts explaining the manual install method? "something else"

I tried many non-forum manuals, and failed miserably with those instructions.
Ended up wiping the HDD
If there are good guides you know of, I would like to learn still.
Possible this post may be found by other newcomers.
I find forums are hard to search.
