When laptop is not in use, I dont want its location known

Hi
I understand when laptop is connected to the internet, its location can be known based on IP.
But when laptop is not in use, how can I make sure "they" cannot know its location? I don't have a specific adversary, "they" could be anyone, google, apple, facebook, the government.
is it enough to put ubuntu in airplane mode, so "they" cannot see the SSIDs around the laptop?
