If you aren't paying MSFT, why do you need/want AD or Samba? Use NFS.

BTW, NTP is deprecated. It has security flaws which can be used to screw with system security. Eventually MSFT will get that notice.

In the Unix world, DHCP/DNS/NFS and time keeping are each separate services. They aren't part of a centralized system. Each is pretty light weight.

I don't remember doing anything special to get the 5.15 kernels installed on my 20.04 systems. I did fresh installs, not upgrades.

We weren't allowed to use V880s where I worked due to their odd 3-cord power hookup requirements. I don't recall the specifics around the V1280, but there was something odd with those too, so we didn't buy any. We had thousands of larger and smaller Sun servers (Oracle). Odd that your company was buying basically the only 2 models we weren't allowed to purchase. We were buying E6800s and E12Ks as fast as Oracle could make them. Also bought huge IBM and HP servers. My projects were mostly Solaris and HP-UX systems. We usually got 64-CPU servers and did virtualization.

The more I look at your needs, seems like Cockpit is the best solution. I slept on it.
