Title: Free and open source mobile OS for my old mobile
Post by: mahesh on Nov 11, 2023, 05:32 AM
Hi Friends,

I often enjoy downloading and installing different types of Linux ie Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mint, Slackware etc, alongside my regular Windows 7 installation and thus I get the fun of having a dual-boot system. The fun part is the free and open source nature of Linux, which also is so well compatible with old hardware.

I would love to download and install different types of Linux/Android based free and open source mobile OSes, if any on a couple of my old smart-phones (both Samsung, both purchased in India - Samsung GT S5303 and Samsung GT S6312), which came pre-installed with some version of Android, but they are no longer being use by any member of my family at all.

Right now, the only free and open source mobile OS that I can download and install seems to be Ubuntu Touch, but it seems to support a limited number of mobile brands/model numbers as of now as per the below page. I hope I have interpreted this page as the official list of devices supported by Ubuntu Touch, if not, then please accept my apologies.

Another is Cyanogenmod, but I know nothing about it.

So, what free and open source OS can I install on my two old mobiles ie Samsung GT S5303 and Samsung GT S6312? Are there any?

Please guide me, thanks.
