Greetings Ubuntu Community,
I recently switched from EndeavourOS to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS this month. Not going to deny it feels bittersweet to admit it, as I have enjoyed my time greatly and learned more than I ever thought possible on an Arch-based distro like EndeavourOS. Truthfully though, the amount of time and energy I spent maintaining, customizing, and updating it the last year and a half has grown tiresome and left me a bit exhausted, but that is all of my own doing. To the teams credit, the EndeavourOS devs manage the distro wonderfully.
Eventually I realized I was only maintaining my system instead of actually using my system...
Honestly, I never thought I'd be back on Ubuntu. The last time I used it as a daily driver was around 2013 or so. I actually installed 22.04 on a whim after my brief run testing Fedora 37 Beta froze up constantly. Every distro I've used in the past has had it's own issues, but for right now Ubuntu 22.04 is working perfectly in every aspect I need. All my apps are here, the system is snappy* (pun intended), and I absolutely LOVE the Yaru theme even more now. I'll be sticking with this LTS release until 22.10 comes out and more than likely I will upgrade to that.
I've been on 22.04 for a week now, everything just works and I really can't understate how amazing that feels knowing I don't have to tweak, edit, or fix anything at all. On EndeavourOS there was always something acting up like bugs in pipewire, toolchain updates, kernel regressions, grub issues, etc. that had just become exhausting to deal with when I just wanted something that works. Don't get me wrong, 90% of the time things ran fine and I spent many hours filing bug reports, so my efforts were not in vain and I was able to help fix numerous issues for the community. But it grew tiresome.
Eventually I realized I was only maintaining my system instead of actually using my system...
So since I'm on Ubuntu now I'd like to give a huge thanks to the Ubuntu devs and their implementation for getting Nvidia drivers working out of the box so well. I barely had to do anything at all to get it setup and running smoothly. I have a Nvidia MX150/Intel hybrid, so like most optimus setups they are notorious for being troublesome to get working just right.
I am a happy Linux user again and loving my decision to stick with Ubuntu. This is not something I'd have thought I'd say, but Ubuntu is a great distro and I'm absolutely delighted to be using it as my daily driver. I do wonder if there are other distro switchers like me that came from a rolling release and ended up on something like Ubuntu? Feel free to share your Ubuntu story and hope you all have a great weekend, thanks for reading my post!
