Title: Question about WhatsDesk application
Post by: kalpana on Nov 07, 2023, 03:15 AM
Hello, everyone. Posted this here, because I didn't think it was appropriate for the Ubuntu Support forums. Since there isn't a Linux-native port of WhatsApp, I've been using the WhatsDesk wrapper from the Ubuntu Software Centre. For the most part, it's behaved as expected, and I have no real complaints about it. I do have a couple of questions, though.

In the settings, there's a toggle option called "skip taskbar." What does this do? I'm assuming the taskbar is the bar at the top of the screen with the system icons, clock, and focused application options. I've used WhatsDesk with this option both on and off, and I can't figure out what the difference is. The WhatsDesk icon is still in the upper right of the screen next to the system icons in both toggle modes. The application launches into a window in both modes. And when I close the window, the application quits in both modes without needing to quit using the taskbar icon. I searched online for an answer, but WhatsDesk documentation seems to be rather scarce.

Another question for y'all. I use Signal, WhatsApp, and Snapchat every day on my computer to talk to different groups of people. Signal has a native Linux port, but WhatsApp and Snapchat do not. Is there an application you'd recommend from the Ubuntu Software Centre or a PPA somewhere that interfaces with all three of these services, so I don't have to run three different applications all the time? I played with Pidgin a while ago, but for whatever reason, LibPurple never really wanted to play nice, and the features were extremely limited to the point of making each service almost unusable. I also tried building a .desktop file that launched Chromium with three tabs—one for each of these services, but this came with its own issues and limitations.

Cheers!
